Community Commitment

Outside the Office

An attorney should be more than just a professional working within a community. An attorney should be committed to the community. For Paul Welchans, an opportunity for commitment to the community came in working with pre-teenage children in a community based baseball program.

Each spring and fall, Mr. Welchans, together with a close friend, Ed Bender, managed a baseball team for children between the ages of 8 and 12 years old. Two, and sometimes three nights per week, Mr. Welchans rushed from the office to work with these youngsters in practices and games. More often than not, he would appear at the practice or game still wearing his business suit.

He also sat as a member of the Board of Directors of Bakersfield SouthWest Baseball for three years leading the campaign to have the Board adopt new equipment rules and game rules to insure the safety of the children.

Mr. Welchans' commitment to the community has made Bakersfield a better place to live.
