Beatriz A. Trejo says szia to Hungarian, humor and highlighters

I can’t go a day without … coffee. I probably drink too much, but it’s now part of my routine.

If you were in my office, you’d … see a lot of different-colored highlighters. It helps me get organized.

My colleagues would be surprised to know that … I speak a little Hungarian. My husband is fluent, so I’ve been learning it for years.

The quality I most like in a lawyer is … humor. Our jobs are stressful and in the zealous representation of our clients, tensions run high. It’s always nice when that tension can be broken.

When I started, I wish I knew … how many different skills are needed to do this work. On a daily basis I use everything from math to interpersonal skills.

My career high point (so far) has been … becoming the first female equity partner in my firm’s 90-year history.

If I weren’t a lawyer, I’d be … an antique dealer. I’m really fascinated by the history and intricacies of old objects. Every object has a story.

A different practice area that intrigues me is … secured transactions. It seems super interesting.

My fictional hero is … Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas. He was the best in his area of practice but still wanted to try something new.

My favorite meal is … tacos. I don’t think I could ever go wrong with a taco.

On my best day I … wake up early, work out before work, and eat “clean.”

On my worst day I … run out the door 20 minutes late and have stale cookies for dinner.

If I had a morning show, my co-host would be … my colleague Jim Yoro, who has been at our law firm 40-plus years. We’ve known each other for 13 years and we are pretty good at humorous banter. At least we make our staff laugh.

The last TV show I binge-watched was … Vice Principals. I’ve binge-watched it a few times and it makes me laugh every single time.

Nothing cheers me up like … seeing my toddler run toward me with his arms open at the end of the day.

My guilty pleasure is … a reality dating show. They start by being relaxing and mindless, but then you find yourself taking sides and getting invested.

My favorite word is … “agreement.” There is nothing sweeter than getting an email that reads “we have an agreement.”

My least-favorite word is … “waiting.” It really is the worst part for clients.

If I won the lottery, I’d … keep it to myself, but there would be signs.

The one piece of advice I offer to new lawyers is … everything is a learning experience. Keep an open mind and you’ll see that there is something new to learn from every person and in every situation.

The question I’m tired of answering is … “How long will it take?” The answer always starts with, “It depends,” and no one wants to hear that.
