The Day A New Album Drops, More People Die On American Roads, New Study Finds

Picking a new album while driving is killing people. In fact, one of the deadliest days to drive in America is the day a major album drops, researchers found.

A peer-reviewed study published in JAMA Network Open analyzed traffic fatality data from 2017 through 2022 alongside Spotify streaming records for the ten most-streamed album releases of that period. The finding: on the days those major albums dropped, traffic fatalities in the United States increased by an estimated 21% compared to surrounding control days. That translates to approximately 17 to 20 excess deaths per major album release day, a statistically significant spike that the researchers found consistent across different album cohort sizes, different analytical methods, and multiple sensitivity checks designed to rule out alternative explanations.

The albums examined included some of the most-streamed releases in Spotify history:

  • Taylor Swift’s Midnights and Red (Taylor’s Version)
  • Drake’s Certified Lover Boy and Scorpion
  • Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti
  • Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers
  • Harry Styles’ Harry’s House
  • Drake and 21 Savage’s Her Loss
  • Kanye West’s Donda
  • Taylor Swift’s Folklore.

Most were released on Fridays, consistent with the music industry’s standard release schedule, which the researchers accounted for in their analysis by comparing album release Fridays directly against the Fridays immediately before and after.

“What this study captures with data is something we see in crash cases regularly,” said Chad Boyles, partner and attorney at the Law Office of Chain | Cohn | Clark. “The moment a driver picks up their phone to do something with it, whether it is texting, navigating, or streaming a new album, they have removed themselves from the road in the most dangerous way possible.”

 

What the Study Found and How It Was Designed

The study, authored by researchers Vimal R. Patel, Christopher M. Worsham, Mengxi Liu, and Anupam B. Jena and published in JAMA Network Open, used an event-study design to isolate the effect of major album releases on daily traffic fatalities, drawing on national fatality data and Spotify streaming records covering the six-year study window.

The core finding was traffic fatalities were 13% higher on album release days. Album release Fridays saw approximately 144 pooled daily fatalities compared to roughly 127 on adjacent control Fridays. The supplemental figures from the study make the pattern visually clear: release day fatality counts stand distinctly above both the preceding and following Fridays, with the effect dissipating within days of the release.

The researchers took multiple steps to ensure the finding was not a statistical artifact. They ran an analysis using 1,000 iterations of randomly assigned “placebo album” dates and found that the simulated effect size exceeded the observed real effect in only 14 of those 1,000 random date iterations, and in only 20 of 1,000 random Friday iterations. That level of statistical robustness places the finding well outside the range of chance.

They also ran a falsification analysis examining fatality counts on the same calendar dates as each album’s release in all other study years, when no album was being released. No comparable spike appeared. That result helps rule out the possibility that the effect reflects something inherent to those particular dates, such as seasonal travel patterns or proximity to holidays, rather than the album releases themselves.

The effect was statistically significant regardless of whether researchers used the top 5, top 10, top 15, top 20, or top 25 most-streamed albums, suggesting the finding is not dependent on any single album or artist driving the result.

 

The Mechanism: Searching for New Music While Driving

The study does not establish a direct causal mechanism, and the researchers are careful to note that limitation. What they propose, based on the streaming data and the behavioral literature, is that album release days prompt a specific type of phone interaction while driving: searching for, selecting, and beginning to stream newly released music.

The supplemental streaming data from the study shows that Spotify streams spike sharply on album release days, with an adjusted increase of approximately 23 million additional streams on the day of release compared to the surrounding baseline period. That spike is concentrated on day zero and then normalizes within a few days, a pattern that mirrors the fatality spike in timing and duration.

The mechanism the researchers point to is visual-manual distraction, the same category of phone interaction that federal safety researchers have identified as among the most dangerous forms of driver distraction. Unlike voice-based interactions, which require minimal visual attention, searching a music streaming platform requires a driver to look at a screen, navigate an interface, and make selections, a sequence that takes eyes off the road for several seconds at a time.

Research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has consistently found that visual-manual phone interactions carry a substantially higher crash risk than hands-free interactions. A separate 2026 IIHS study found that the faster a driver is traveling over the speed limit, the more likely they are to simultaneously be manipulating a handheld cellphone, suggesting that the most dangerous driving behaviors tend to cluster together in the same drivers at the same moments.

“What makes this finding particularly important is that it is about a behavior that most people do not recognize as dangerous,” Boyles said. “Texting while driving has been the subject of public safety campaigns for over a decade. But finding a new album, adjusting a playlist, skipping tracks, all of that involves the same physical and cognitive process as texting, and it carries the same risk. This study puts a number on what that risk looks like at a national scale.”

 

California Law and Phone Use While Driving

California has some of the strictest laws in the country regarding handheld phone use while driving. Under California Vehicle Code Section 23123.5, drivers are prohibited from holding or using a handheld electronic device while operating a motor vehicle. This includes any use that requires holding the phone, which encompasses navigating a music streaming app, selecting a new album, adjusting playback, or changing tracks while the vehicle is in motion.

The law permits hands-free use through Bluetooth, voice commands, or a properly mounted device that can be operated with a single touch or swipe. Simply placing a phone in a cupholder and using it to interact with a streaming service does not meet the hands-free standard if the driver’s hand is required to hold or operate the device.

Violations carry fines, but the legal consequences of a crash caused by distracted phone use extend far beyond a traffic ticket. When a driver’s phone interaction contributes to a collision that injures or kills someone, that interaction is central evidence in any personal injury or wrongful death claim. Cell phone records can be subpoenaed to establish whether a driver was actively using their device in the moments before a crash. Vehicle telematics data, eyewitness accounts, and in some cases data from the streaming platform itself can be relevant to reconstructing what was happening on that phone and when.

California’s comparative fault framework means that even partial evidence of phone distraction on the part of an at-fault driver can significantly affect the damages analysis in a civil case. When a driver was navigating a streaming app at the time of a collision, the legal picture shifts from negligence toward conduct that a jury may view as reckless, a distinction that matters in determining the scope of what an injured person or surviving family can recover.

 

What the Research Means Beyond the Headlines

The JAMA study received significant coverage major outlets in the days following its publication, and the coverage reflects a genuine public interest in understanding how everyday smartphone behaviors translate into real-world harm.

The study’s authors are clear that it does not establish causation in the strict experimental sense. They cannot prove that any specific driver opened Spotify, searched for a new album, and then crashed as a result. What the study does establish, through a rigorous quasi-experimental design with multiple layers of validation, is a consistent, statistically significant, and temporally specific association between major album release days and elevated traffic fatalities, an association that survives every analytical challenge the researchers applied to it.

The practical implication is not that people should stop using streaming services. It is that the moment of interaction, the searching, selecting, and beginning playback of new music, carries a distraction risk that drivers and passengers should manage deliberately. Cueing up new music before starting a vehicle, using voice commands through a properly mounted device, or having a passenger handle music selection are all approaches that eliminate the need for the type of visual-manual phone interaction the study’s findings implicate.

For Kern County drivers who regularly make long stretches on Highway 99, State Route 58, and Interstate 5, where posted speeds are high and the margin for error is narrow, the timing of phone interactions carries heightened consequences. A distracted moment at 70 miles per hour on a limited-access highway leaves significantly less room for correction than the same distraction at 30 miles per hour on a surface street.

“What this research adds to the conversation is a level of specificity that should make people think differently about how they use their phones in the car,” Boyles said. “It is not just texting. It is not just social media. It is any interaction that pulls your eyes and your hands away from driving. The data from this study shows that even something as routine as playing a new album can have consequences that show up in national fatality statistics.”
